October 2008 Archives
So I looked up some graphics cards things today, out of some anxiety that Tomb Raider: Underworld won't run smooth as silk. =D
From what I gather, there's Nvidia's GTX280, which reigns king as far as performance goes, but sells for $400+. Its little brother is the GTX260, which hits the $300 mark.
ATI's competition at the $300 mark is the HD 4870, which uses up less power but runs really hot. Competing at the sub-$200 category right now seems to be the HD 4850 and the 9800 GTX+. I'll probably get one of the cards at the $200 range. The HD 4850 runs a little bit cheaper, but also much hotter as a card. It takes up only one slot, though, so I need to check if my mobo has enough space to take in the 9800 GTX+. I read that the 4850 is considered the best value card, so I'm still a bit confused as to how it holds up to the 9800 GTX+, which also has PhysX capabilities.
I don't think most graphics cards have SVGA outputs anymore, judging from the pictures I've seen. So I'll probably want a new monitor (or a converter), and definitely a new power supply as well.
=| I'll need like, $500.
This is the worst season to try to play less games.

Someone recently asked me what animes I'm watching, since I present myself as an anime fan/otaku, as well as an avid gamer. I realized, I wasn't watching any series. No One Piece, no Naruto, no Bleach... no manga, either. Neither watched nor read Death Note. In fact, I can't really remember the last anime I watched.
So, here's a list of things I'm watching, and shows that pique my interest. More to remind myself than anything else:
Michiko e Hatchin - by the same genius that brought Samurai Champloo.
Candy Boy - GL fluff.
Eve no Jikan - Awesome ONA about a future society, probably Japan, and robots.
Hyakko - Comedy?
Let's take a look at series I've seen before:
I can't remember the last series that I really watched. I was into One Piece, Lucky Star and Marimite. Older-school favorites include Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Noir. El Cazador de la Bruja was pretty good; better than Madlax, not as endearing as Noir. ARIA the Animation was a calm and serene show, filled with heartwarming elegance. Fairly enjoyed Mai Otome; the characters were cute, but I didn't really like the story much. At some point mixed in there is Stellvia. Kashimashi is fluff hidden amongst angst, but the payoff was nice, and Re:Cutie Honey was style with substance. I know I watched Utena around a year or two ago because it was a classic, but it was too strange for me. Reaching back into history, there's also Escaflowne. Girl's High was funny in its own quirky way, and has an awesome ED song. Shingetsutan Tsukihime has an adorable white vampire in Arcueid, and a ridiculously awesome OP. And the one I totally forgot, which I'm rather ashamed of forgetting, is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's up there with the cream of the crop.
The fact that I can't quickly recall a list of, "greats" or "favorite" anime is fairly disturbing to me. =( I had to refer to my anime music folder to remember what I had seen in the past.
Right now in the games front, I'm looking forward to Left 4 Dead, which I've pre-purchased, and Tomb Raider: Underworld. Both of which come out Nov. 18! xD
Other interesting games are Red Alert 3 and Mirror's Edge, both of which are a few weeks before L4D.
